National 3 Peaks challenge

National Three Peaks Challenge

Take on three mountains. Three countries. One unforgettable challenge.

The National Three Peaks Challenge is one of the UK’s most iconic hiking adventures, taking you to the summit of the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales.

Over the course of the challenge, you’ll take on:

Ben Nevis – Scotland
The highest mountain in the UK, standing at 1,345 metres.

Scafell Pike – England
The highest mountain in England, standing at 978 metres.

Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) – Wales
The highest mountain in Wales, standing at 1,085 metres.

Together, the challenge involves around 23 miles of walking and approximately 3,000 metres of ascent, making this a demanding but incredibly rewarding experience.

Why we complete the challenge over 30 hours

Traditionally, the National Three Peaks Challenge is attempted within 24 hours, including the travel time between each mountain.

We take a different approach.

Our National Three Peaks Challenge is run over a maximum 30-hour period, allowing us to put the safety and wellbeing of our participants, mountain team and drivers first.

Trying to complete three demanding mountain climbs while travelling long distances between each location can place unnecessary pressure on both walkers and drivers. By allowing up to 30 hours, we can create a safer, better-managed and more enjoyable challenge without taking away from the incredible achievement of completing all three peaks.

However, the additional time does not mean there is no pressure on the clock.

There are still designated cut-off times throughout the challenge that participants must achieve in order to continue.

These cut-off times are an important part of safely managing the event. They allow our team to assess progress, daylight, weather conditions, travel timings and the overall wellbeing of the group.

Participants are expected to maintain a suitable pace on each mountain and reach agreed checkpoints within the required timeframe.

If a participant does not reach a designated cut-off point within the required time, they may be asked to turn around or withdraw from that particular section of the challenge. Any decision made by the challenge team will always be based on safety and must be respected.

The 30-hour format allows us to avoid unnecessarily rushing between mountains while still keeping the challenge structured, demanding and achievable.

It may be 30 hours rather than 24 – but this is still very much a challenge against the clock.

Travel in comfort

Transport between each mountain is provided in a luxury minibus, giving you the opportunity to rest and recover between climbs.

We also operate driver changes throughout the challenge, helping us maintain our commitment to safety during the long-distance journey between each mountain.

While the walking is tough, your time on the road should be as comfortable as possible, allowing you to rest, refuel and prepare yourself for the next climb.

All you need to concentrate on is the next mountain.

What does the challenge involve?

The National Three Peaks Challenge is a serious endurance event and requires a good level of fitness, determination and preparation.

Across the challenge, you can expect:

  • Around 23 miles of mountain walking

  • Approximately 3,000 metres of total ascent

  • Long periods on your feet

  • Travel between Scotland, England and Wales

  • Limited opportunities for sleep
